Official Translators: Your Guide to Studying Abroad as an EU Citizen

By Konstantinos Menyktas & Elena Koutounidou*

Are you an EU citizen thinking of studying abroad, either within the EU or in a third country like the US, Canada, or Australia? It’s important to understand the necessary documents and requirements to ensure a smooth application process. We’ve compiled all the information you need to start your studies without challenges, addressing key questions you may have.

Required Documents

The documents needed for studying abroad vary by country and university, but generally, you will need language certificates, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Below, we outline the most common documents and conditions for studying abroad.

Standard Documents for Studying Abroad

In addition to academic credentials, you’ll need to provide some standard documents when applying to universities. Common requirements include:

  • Passport Photos
  • ID – Certified copy of ID
  • Passport – Certified copy of passport (if needed)
  • Curriculum Vitae – In English and/or the language of the university
  • GMAT/GRE Score – For postgraduate programs (if needed)
  • Transcript of Records (ToR) – The original document along with an official English translation
  • High School Diploma (for undergraduate) / Degree (for postgraduate) – Certified and officially translated copies

To study abroad, prepare all required documents for university admission, including those listed above, and check if the university has additional requirements.

Language Certificates

The most widely recognized English language certificates are IELTS, Cambridge Advanced Exam (CAE), and TOEFL. These are often fundamental requirements for admission to English-language programs.

Letters of Recommendation and Personal Statement

Letters of recommendation from teachers or professors, along with a personal statement, are often crucial components of your application to many degree and post-graduate programs.

Requirements for Non-EU Countries

For studies in countries outside the European Union, additional requirements may include a student visa and other specific documents. If you are a Greek citizen or a citizen of another EU country, confirm that your degree will be recognized in your home country should you decide to return in the future.

Do Certified Translations Need a Hague Apostille?

Some official documents may require a Hague Apostille before being officially translated. Ensure that you have obtained this if needed before submitting your documents for official translation. Consult the competent authorities in your region or directly contact the university to verify requirements. In Greece, the Apostille can be obtained from the Decentralized Administration of your region, such as the Decentralized Administration of Attica for those living in Athens.

The Role of the Official Translator

The role of the official translator is vital in your study abroad journey. Official translators provide certified translations of your transcripts, diplomas, and other required documents. They can also assist with translating or editing your CV and personal statements and offer guidance on document preparation and general advice.

Trust your official translator during this important phase of your life that will shape your future!
